If an escort is a Doctor who goes to the hospital everyday and performs surgery on people, then a porn performer is Dr. Oz.
If an escort is a practicing psychologist, then a porn performer is Dr. Phil.
Both require knowledge about the topic at hand (sex, medicine, psychology), but the jobs require different personalities and specialized skill sets. Obviously one is more suited to direct, interpersonal work while the other is better suited to entertaining and appealing to a wide audience.
Your average Doctor working in a hospital probably doesn't want his/her own TV show, along with the responsibility of entertaining millions of viewers. And Dr. Phil probably loves being on TV, and does not want to spend his time psychoanalyzing individual patients in private instead.
California v. Freeman . A big part of why so much production of pornography takes place in California is that this case essentially laid out it was OK to do so in that state. Adult production companies know that decision exists, know it's not been challenged to any significant extent in California since, and know that it is the law of the land (in California, at least). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal. Roth v. United States . While this 1950s Supreme Court case did designate obscenity as not being protected by the First Amendment, it also ended up designated most pornography was not obscene. The definitions of obscenity laid out by this decision were sufficiently narrow so as to allow for most all commercial pornography falling outside of it, and thus enjoying First Amendment protections. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rot.
No such cases exist for prostitution; pornography has survived court challenges and prosecutions, and consistently decisions have come from the courts that continue to acknowledge the legality of pornography and the right to both produce and purchase it.
Well let's knock the obvious out of the way, both are sex workers of some sort as they're performing some sort of sexual act for some sort of compensation. Sugarcoat it all you want, that’s the bottom line.
Now for the differences. Many prostitutes will discourage you from filming them. And if you do there's often an additional fee and they may wear something to cover their face or keep their face off screen as much as possible. In porn, it's the opposite. The entertainers are going in with the expectation of being on film and being seen by tons of people.
Next to that, a pornstar is going about it for the sake of entertainment. It's for the viewer rather than the person(s) involved. A prostitute is doing it for the enjoyment of other person they're currently with. That is to say in porn, many entertainers will tell you that many of those positions aren't the most pleasing, but they work best to give the viewer the best view. A prostitute is going to do thing and get in positions that benefit the person they're with and typically no one else.
Speaking of filming and viewers, a pornstar will go about a shoot with a written contract, series of sexual disease/illness tests, and an entire cast and crew. To be clear, though there are tests and protocol, entertainers aren't completely free from disease and illness, the risk is still there. In regards to the prostitute, it's typically the prostitute and the customer and that's it. So there's more risk with prostitution and for the prostitute than there is within the porn industry in regards to personal health as well as safety.
So really the main difference is in regards to those involved and the level of safety. The porn industry is well regulated, where as there's really no regulation in prostitution in terms of safety and overall well being (obviously is many areas there's regulation via law enforcement). With that in mind, yes pornstars are uplifted above prostitutes. And truth be told, this makes my head spin because many pornstars have admitted to being a prostitute prior to becoming an entertainers, some have even returned to prostitution after becoming an entertainer. But the reason for the negativity is due to the illegal and unregulated nature of prostitution, where as the adult entertainment industry is really the same but with paid and protected actors.
But this is the same everywhere. I currently work in construction. Many of our laborers bounce between companies depending on how much work the companies have going on. Well when things get slow, many will go out on their own and do unlicensed repair work. At the same time, construction firms will talk down on and try to convince you to avoid all unlicensed contractors when many of the unlicensed laborers are literally the same laborers that would come from a licensed firm 8 months out of the year. So what’s the difference? Now to be clear, I’m not saying all prostitutes have once been entertainers just like I’m not saying all laborers once worked with a licensed company. But rather that it’s about money.
